NHS – Guys and St Thomas’s Trust

Part of Guys and St Thomas Teaching Trust, this client had integrated the paediatric intensive care ward with the paediatric, cardiac intensive care ward. This brought with it changes in ward management and a requirement to improve communication and team working. Providing a unique opportunity to plan for success, we worked with senior management and began this project with an internal employee and senior management review and analysis.

Once we had presented our recommendations and the client decided to proceed, we defined, designed and delivered, in collaboration with them, a team development activity/workshop involving all team members. Working in collaboration with management, we focused on developing teamwork and improving communication understanding and skills.

Using the analysis and feedback as our guide, we designed an initiative that allowed the wards to:

  • Improve the communication processes between the wards
  • Work collectively and become integrated
  • Be responsible and accountable for team results
  • Become action oriented, enthusiastic about change and moving forward

The workshops were significant in achieving a significant step towards team orientated, exploring, discussing and planning how they would become trusting, collaborative and proactive. Our approach that led them to agree upon the team behaviours they required to collectively meet the demands of the fast changing environment.

The outcomes from this event meant that the team members could:

  • Work more effectively as a team
  • Transfer the team values into everyday behaviour
  • Understand the barriers that can arise from newly formed teams
  • Support each other in identifying team objectives
  • Highlight key areas of concern facing the team
  • Communicate more effectively and build more trusting relationships

We continue our relationship with this client.
